To promote clean, sustainable drinking water and reduce plastic waste, Malta has rolled out two major initiatives in 2025 — a €100 voucher for vulnerable households and a 60% government grant on tap water filtration systems for all other eligible residents. Whether you’re eligible for the full voucher or partial rebate, this is your chance to upgrade your water and protect the planet.

Let’s break down how it works, who can apply, and where to get your filter.

Let’s break down how it works and who can apply

🏠 Option 1: €100 Voucher for Vulnerable Households

Starting 1st July 2025, the government will send €100 vouchers by post to 13,000 vulnerable households in Malta. These vouchers can be used to fully cover the cost of an activated carbon water filtration system, making clean tap water accessible at no personal cost.

Who’s Eligible?

You qualify if:

  • Your household receives energy-related social benefits

  • You’re considered a vulnerable household under the national criteria

No application is needed. Vouchers will arrive automatically by mail and can be redeemed at registered suppliers.

💶 Option 2: 60% Grant for All Other Households

If you’re not eligible for the €100 voucher, you can still benefit from the Tap Water Scheme grant, which covers 60% of the purchase and installation cost of an activated carbon filter — up to a maximum of €100.

✅ Who’s Eligible?

  • Private individuals for residential use

  • Non-profit organisations not engaged in economic activity

To apply:

  1. Purchase and install an approved water filtration system

  2. Submit your application and receipt to the Regulator for Energy and Water Services (REWS) within 6 months
